Exactly same thing was going on in my head as I was reading the article. I'm really disappointed and sad, governor would choose a blue dog democrat in a solid democratic state. This proves that he is not only can't see with his eyes but also can't think with his brain. To me, I would take the gov. from IL (sorry can't spell his name) over this blind ass any time. At least he appointed someone who is in line with in term of policy with the person he is replacing.

Caroline Kennedy would have been excellent senator just like her uncle.

that sucks... I miss caroline kennedy. I got pretty pissed when bill o riley kept ripping on her... come on you barely know her geesh. So much hate, just because she's democrat... totally jacked up, I hate bill o riley much more now.

as if Arnold was qualified... you don't see Bill O riley calling him a pin head. I think Bill O Riley is a freaking pinhead, biggest one ever.

I was surprised at first, but thinking about it more I really am not. I'm guessing women groups played some role in this to keep the number of women in the senate constant.

"The selection would give upstate New York representation in the Senate and also would not change the number of women in the upper chamber. " - thehill.

We saw the same thing with Sen. Burris and the whole "we need a African American in the senate."

Still, I really thought he was going to pick Cuomo. Oh well. It is possible she could become more liberal, but it is a pretty lousy choice not even considering the anti-immigrant part. Why pick a blue dog democrat in a fairly liberal state? It doesn't make sense.

Okay this is proof that this STATE SUCKS! I wish my husband was not stationed here. So after all of my complaining, I'm guessing this is bad bad news right? Well I already live in "hickville" not to mention I've already had my fair share of ignorance.

By the way the first day I got to this STUPID STUPID state I was watching the news and my first thought on the Governor was "what a morron!" I just found out he was bling!!! woops I thought he was just really stupid and weird looking. Well I guess coming from California and the Governator I really don't have room to talk right? LOL

Seriously guys, there's no need for hysteria. She can definitely be persuaded to our side and she's already moved to support gay marriage, an issue that is at least as controversial as immigration:

Gillbrand

Quote:
She has a "moderate" reputation for her pro-gun stance -- but is more or less a down-the-line liberal Democrat; the gun position draws her some flack on her left flank to the same degree that it protects her right and strengthens her upstate. But she assured the state's leading gay rights group yesterday that she backs same-sex marriage, and shows no other conservative leanings.
Total bummer that we have to worry about the NY vote, but we can definitely work hard and get her support for both CIR and Dream.

Cuomo or Kennedy would have been 1000% better though.

"I aspire to follow in her footsteps," Kirsten Gillibrand says of Clinton"

Lets see how much she will follow...

As I reported last night, New York Gov. David Paterson has just named upstate New York Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to replace Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as the state’s new junior senator.
Last night I got word from immigration advocates that they were upset about this appointment because Gilliband is a cosponsor of the SAVE Act, a strong enforcement bill introduced in the House last year. And on her Web site Gillibrand talks about her stance against illegal immigration.
But a New York immigration lawyer who has a home in her district says he believes she will moderate her views once she represents all of New York State as opposed to just this conservative upstate district.
All of this means Gillibrand could be a target of both sides in this emotional issue that is likely to be brought up sometime in this 111th Congress.
“I see her as a moderate on immigration issues and she’s also a work in progress,’’ said Ted Ruthizer. “She’s a little more enforcement oriented than I’d like her to be. But I’ve seen a willingness to reconsider on positions.”
Ruthizer believes that while as a House member she would have voted against the McCain-Kennedy bill that included legalization of undocumented immigrants, that she could be persuaded to vote for it as a senator.

Its ironic that news reports are not making any mention on where she stand on immigration...

They report all her conservative stands from pro-gun to her fiscal conservatism.

Her website is now unavailable http://gillibrand.house.gov/ as she starts her flip flopping process.
