I'm curious as to how (and, more importantly, IF) this chatter among GOP leaders will lead to, say, a couple more Republican votes for DREAM.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/cq/20090129/...itics3021217_2

In particular:

"[Senate Minority Leader] McConnell said the party will also have to do a better job of targeting minority voters, particularly Hispanics, who in 11 years will constitute one-fifth of all voters.

Recruiting new voters will require some innovative messaging, McConnell said. In part, it comes down to convincing voters that the GOP cares about education, immigrants, the environment and affordable health care -- issues that many voters associate with the Democratic party."

Everyone knows I'm at least a little bit of a lefty--and everyone knows my take on them ever "caring" about education, the environment, and affordable health care as long as the fiscal libertarians are in charge--but with regards to immigration I have some hope that some GOP Senators from diverse or increasingly diverse states will come to their senses. Bush made large strides with Hispanic voters in 2004, capitalizing on the social conservatism that they are traditionally associated with. If the GOP wants a bump in the near future, they'll have to do some ideological soul-searching, and hopefully that is already happening, in the Senate at least.

It should, did McConnell vote for dream in 07? I know he voted for CIR. My only worry is this is only talk, then when it comes down to votes it turns into a partisan vote

exactly... my concern as well. looking at the congress right now, I think the bipartisan dream is long gone. But maybe when we call and email these senators, some of them (we only need few right?) to vote for Dream.

As long as people like Rush limbaugh, lou dobb are makes decision for Republican, they will keep driving people away. Most politician are short sighted. They never think long term. By the time, republican would realize what have done, it would be too late. They were in love with Bush and after 8 yr they realize what a f**ked up choice that was. Immigration would be same.
