Crowley hopes for more than a DREAM

Congressman Joseph Crowley recognizes that the people of his district, which covers neighborhoods in both Queens and the Bronx, have much to gain or lose depending on how Congress acts. Crowley represents a district where 40 percent of his constituents are Latino. More than half of them were not born here and among them are non citizens.

In an editorial board meeting with El Diario/La Prensa yesterday, Crowley said he is hopeful that at the very least, the DREAM Act will become a reality this year. The Act would allow some high school students who are undocumented to obtain legal status if they meet certain requirements.

Crowley wants Washington to take steps beyond the DREAM Act. But he is not sure that the Senate can secure strong support for comprehensive reform. “I don’t know whether the Senate has the wherewithal to do that and get past the 60 vote, the cloture vote,” he said.
