We need to call Governor Doyle and ask him to sign this. This could be the beginning of a trend among the liberal states.

Doyle open to creating driver cards for immigrants

Associated Press
5:03 PM CDT, May 29, 2009

MILWAUKEE - Gov. Jim Doyle seems open to a plan to allow illegal immigrants to qualify for cards giving them permission to drive.

The Legislature's budget committee approved the plan early Friday. It would allow illegal immigrants who pass the required tests to receive driver's cards.

The cards would look different from driver's licenses and say in bold letters they could not be used for other official purposes.

Doyle says the public should want to make sure drivers have "some basic qualifications to drive."

But he also says he has to look further at the plan before deciding whether to sign it into law.

Some law enforcement officials say the plan would make roads safer and help officers identify suspects.

Well first of all the whole Terrorism scare in New York doesn't help our cause. I think there is a good chance this could pass in Wisconsin though. The courts are getting clogged up with minor infractions like driving without a license.

Also, there are more and more cases of hit runs or not reporting accidents because they don't have licenses. Personally, I will not drive until i can legally do so. However, there are many people who can't afford not to and are driving illegally every day to work or to pick up their kids or what not.

Safer roads, and an increase in money to the DMV's budget. This thing's gotta pass as a temporary fix.

Yes! Positive things. Driver cards for immigrants is only a part of the new State budget for Wisconsin. The state budget is bringing in a lot of controversy between Republicans and Democrats however there are two key points:

1) Democrats hold the majority.
2) Though Republicans are not happy with Driver Cards for immigrants being part of the budget, it has not been brought up very much.

This means that when they work the kinks out there is a very definite chance that Driver Cards will sneak in there. They are working on it next week. The new budget will go into effect on July 1st.

Let's keep our fingers crossed!
