Politics is not an all or nothing game. I think this is a tremendous achievement for Wisconsin advocates, especially considering that the Senate tried to strike the provision down.

As far as I know, there are no states that have "special driver licenses" for undocumented immigrants. Perhaps this was put in there by the Joint Finance Committee to have another bargaining chip in the bill. "Take the licenses leave us in-state and we have a deal." I'm not saying that thats how it happened. All I'm saying is that you have to ask more than what you expect to get or your expectations will be compromised away.

No, not quite how it happened. I've been watching this for months. Both should have passed. There were many groups supporting the driver cards program. Wisconsin would have been the second state to approve such cards, next to Utah.

I stand corrected.

Looks like it was the Senate that struck it down. From the report it seems like the decision "reduce[d] estimated transportation fund revenue by $1,776,800 in
2009-10 and $1,976,800 in 2010-11." Genius move.

From what I've been told this may have been the way it went down in Texas years ago. This is great news regardless and people should stop complaining about not getting the whole pie and just a slice.

Yah it's definitely a big win. I'm just frustrated that I can go to school but I can't drive there. Oh well, the hardships of an undocumented student. It'll only make my autobiography more epic!

BTW, yah Wisconsin is making a killing on all the tickets they're handing out to unlicensed drivers. Good find.
