- Rep. Heath Shuler's proposal to toughen immigration enforcement quickly attracted support Thursday from a broad range of Democrats and Republicans.

Seventy-five members of the House - divided almost equally between the two parties -- signed on as original co-sponsors of the Waynesville Democrat's SAVE (Save America through Verification and Enforcement) Act.
Eleven House members -- including North Carolina Democrats Larry Kissell of Biscoe and Mike McIntyre of Lumberton, and Republican Sue Myrick of Charlotte -- joined Sens. David Vitter, R-La., and Mark Pryor, D-Ark., at a Capitol Hill news conference to announce introduction of the legislation. Pryor plans to introduce a companion bill in the Senate.

Guess that's one dem vote in the senate we can't count on. It will be interesting to see how many senators sign up as co-sponsors.

WASHINGTON -- Requiring employers to check whether their workers are in the country legally is a "necessary first step" to comprehensive immigration reform, Alabama Rep. Artur Davis said Thursday.

"We need to know who is here," said Davis, D-Birmingham. "We need to be able to measure and verify our population."
Davis and Rep. Bobby Bright, D-Montgomery, attended a news conference Thursday to support a bill that would require all employers to check workers' citizenship status using the E-Verify program, which is now voluntary.

Is it possible to support this bill and CIR at the same time?

The only bad thing I can see from the bill is requiring all employers to use E-verify. I don't really understand how they can pass this, and not expect a large amount of undocumented immigrants to lose their jobs. It would be bad for the country to have so many more people out work.

I would agree that this should be included in CIR though.

i'm starting to loose faith in the democrats.
at first they're like if we out numbered the rep. we can turn the whole thing around, but come on, even with dems out numbering rep in the senate, they didn't do anything useful. it took them 2 freaken month to figure out the stimulus package, then another 2 month to talk about health care but failed, said if any sort of e-verify is to pass, its with some sort of immigration thing attached to it... now, they pass it by itself.....

i'm disappointed.
