I know a similar article has been posted earlier, but it has been locked for commenting. This is a different article from NBC (local).

This tragedy is putting immigration policies into question, it is causing debate and moving us ahead. This is a terrible tragedy, but almost miraculously it is helping us.

We do not know whether it is helping us or not.
It is clear that they will get at least a temporary status, but it is unclear whether it will have any impact on the overall immigration reform debate. Even if this tragedy leads to some kind of debate, it could be just limited to wether those from Haiti should be granted a permanent status or not.

Anyway, it is sad to see such a disaster rattling a country that was already devastated even before it.
