"Assemblyman Tim Donnelly today announced that said the effort to repeal the California Dream Act had fallen short of gathering enough signatures needed to get on the ballot.

Donnelly released the following statement regarding the referendum to place AB 131 on the November ballot.

"Despite an incredible effort by tens of thousands of volunteers working alongside professional petition gatherers, I regret to announce that we have not met our goal to collect 504,760 valid signatures in under 90 days.

The count as of late last night, however, was 447,514 signatures - a shortfall that prevented supporters from submitting the signatures today to the registrar of voters.

"This is disappointing news, especially in light of Governor Brown's announcement that he will be seeking yet another tax hike on California families. The Governor signed AB 131, creating a new entitlement program for illegal immigrants while the State still has a budget deficit over $9 billion, and cannot even meet it's obligation to legal California students. How can the Governor and Democrat Legislators who voted for AB 131 justify spending even more money in these economic conditions?

"Legal California residents of every age, race, religion, income and political party came together to fight to restore sanity to the Golden State. They put forth a valiant effort and I consider it an honor to have worked with them. Today only marks the end of one battle in a war to reclaim the average citizen's voice in the Legislature. We will not give up the fight to save California from the reckless politicians who want to raise our taxes to put the college dreams of illegals ahead of our own children."

The Stop AB 131 campaign had 78 days to collect the signatures in order to qualify the referendum.

The legislation gives undocumented students in California the opportunity to apply for financial aid.

According to the non-partisan legislative analysts office, it will cost $65 million dollars in the first year, and "go up rapidly for 5 years" consuming almost a half a billion tax dollars in that time frame.
"

Great news for CA Dreamers.

Looks like we have the momentum going into 2012!

I wholeheartedly believe the Federal DA will happen

*this is me dancing*

Fucking Donnelly is a xenophobic jerk, he basically admitted on John Steward's The Daily Show to being able to "tie anything to illegal immigration," basically, we're this dick's scapegoats for everything. Let us not forget that this asshole was a member of the minutemen. I'm so glad he didn't get his way and the CA Dream Act is now on.
