Can any tell that if you get you work permit and then go to the SSN office to get your number
for the first time, will they give you a receipt stating that you have applied for an ssn. If so, can you take this to the DMV to get an ID and not have to wait for the number to come in the mail?

Which, honestly doesn't bug me too much right now because A) I don't have a car anyway, and B) I already know how to drive. So, the second I get my SSN I can take the driving test. I guess I just want to get as much out of the way as possible ASAP. If anything changes on the day of my appt i'll update y'all.
So you can take the test but you won't get your learner's permit? Do you get anything saying that you passed your test though? How do they identify you as the one who passed the test?

You need the number.
Your best bet, as discussed before, is to wait ten business days after the date on the final notice of approval before walking in to sign up for one. It will take less time for them to issue you a number which you can probably go back for quicker and obtain so you may use it at the DMV. The actual card would arrive later than that, but it could save you some time.

Someone got their SSN generated today, not the card. They applied 9/17 like I did. So it can take less than 4 weeks.

Woooooow embarrassingly matricula omg really!!! If it wasn't for that ID you would have never open a bank account and other services! It's crazy how people forget! I will always be undocumented at heart and I will not be embarrassed of my situation... anyways the only thing I'm happy about is people saying we don't accept type that of identification! Really? Even at this crappy Mexican restaurant! My family and I wallked out of there!!

Well. I never really used the matricula. I was able to pull out the wa dl. The only problem was when I was pulled over by cops they would bitch about how I need to get a ca dl.

Yeah even my passports been turned down at some bars. A CA ID would be wayy more useful. Imma get one while I'm waiting to take my drive test.

Hey all,

I have a question about this CA DL thing. I have a legit SSN under my name that I've always used. I want to get my DL as soon as the EAD is in my hands. Will I be issued a new number if my case is approved? Or will they just remove the annoying thing that says "not valid for employment" and I get to keep the same SSN.

I am asking because if they are not going to issue me a new SSN, would I be able to show my current SSN at the DMV as soon as the EAD gets to me?
