Boehner: GOP to focus on debt, not immigration or climate

It looks like there be no votes in the House of Rep. until after May on immigration potentially.
Quote:
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Tuesday that House Republicans would keep their focus on budget deficits in the coming weeks, after President Obama’s inaugural address called for action on climate change, immigration and a host of other issues.

“We’re going to continue to focus – especially here over this next 90-, 120-day period – on bringing some fiscal responsibility to Washington,” Boehner told reporters.

Boehner’s remarks came a day before the House is scheduled to vote on a measure that would take the debt ceiling off the table until May, while also looking to pressure the Senate into passing a budget for the first time since 2009.

In the months to come, Washington also faces looming sequester cuts and the expiration of a measure to fund the government, deadlines which some conservatives hope can force action on spending restraint.

In his address Monday, Obama called for equal treatment for gays and lesbians and for helping the poor, in addition to tackling climate change and changing immigration procedures.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said this week that he wants to make immigration reform a priority, and key Republicans like Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) have also said Washington needs to examine the country’s immigration system.

Advocates for more aggressive climate measures, meanwhile, are pinning their hopes on executive actions, given the bleak prospects for legislation on Capitol Hill.

A Senate push to cap greenhouse gases collapsed in 2010, at a time when Democrats held a stronger majority than they do now, after legislation narrowly passing the House in 2009.

Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, suggested on Tuesday that getting climate legislation through Congress would be a tall task. Advocates have called for executive action on setting carbon emission standards and rejecting the proposed Keystone XL oil sands pipeline, among other things.

“It's clear that bipartisan opposition to legislative action is still a reality,” Carney said.

Lets see how long they can ignore immigration in the House. This issue is like an anaconda which will slowly squeeze the GOP to death if they don't do anything about it. Go ahead and focus on your debt. I'm sure it won't take you all year to do so Boehner. Time's ticking.

Couldn't have put it better myself. They can run but how far will they go? Once the Senate passes CIR, do you really think Boehner and Company can avoid it? This entire country will go stand outside Capital Hill demanding action. This is going to be oh so sweet. Years and years of misery about to come to an end.

Now we just need the Latino populations in southern states to hit the voting booths hard. Imagine the beautiful sight of a purple Texas?

If there is enough members of Congress that want a vote on immigration, they can override the Speaker's power and file a discharge petition with a simple majority, and its forced to go to the floor for a vote.
