I agree with the President.Republicans have used the "benefits" issue against reform before.
Quote:
In his meeting with immigration advocates on Tuesday, President Barack Obama defended his decision to recommend that immigrants who immediately gain legal status remain ineligible for subsidies under the 2010 health care law, saying Democrats need to pick their fights carefully, according to a participant in the meeting.

Under the White House framework, many of the estimated 11 million people in the country illegally would gain legal status, but would have a longer path to citizenship. Before becoming citizens, Mr. Obama recommended that these people remain ineligible for the health care subsidies, sidestepping a potentially toxic side debate in immigration talks.

In explaining his thinking, the president urged advocates to be “strategic” in their thinking, the participant said.

So what do you take of these Ianus.. Do you think the president genuinely wants an immigration reform bill with path to citizenship or is he playing politics to keep it a wedge issue for 2014?

Oh gawddd the strategy is simple..Green cards for DACA beneficiaries. DACA type status with travel authorization for the rest of the crowd. That's all. Obama needs to get this thing rolling already...we're too tired.

I think the motives of the President are irrelevant at this stage since the Congress is giving very strong signals that they will be acting on the issue.I don't think anyone can say what the President is thinking at this point[Republicans included] but I do expect both sides in the Congress to try to score points with their base on the issue which is the real problem surrounding possible poison pill amendments any compromise.

I think that's what might happen but it might lose quite a bit of Democrats if it came to that.I was thinking perhaps they should actually come back with a variation of modified version of former Chairman of the Judiciary Arlen Specter's Gold Card plan.It would be absolutely ideal!
