I came across this interesting event. Connect for Kids are hosting a live online chat tomorrow at 1:00 pm Eastern Time.

Quote:
Join Maricela Donahue, a field organizer at the Center for Community Change and Melissa Lazarin, a senior policy analyst for the National Council of La Raza, for this important conversation.
If you have any questions you want to ask post right now or joing them tomorrow.

It works like this.
You either submit a question now or when the actual chat is going to be taking place. Either way its going to be answered tomorrow. They will choose the most appropriate questions and answer them. So they are collecting questions now and when the guests come in they will have something to ask right away.

I'll be monitoring the chat tomorrow since I will be free at that time and if some other question comes up I will ask then.

Progress so far:

Quote:
Juan, Chicago IL: Is there any possibility that legislators remove financial aid from the DREAM Act? Perhaps in this way it could please those that disagree with giving financial aid to undocumented students.

Melissa: Anything is possible. Currently, under the way in which the bill is drafted, DREAM students would be eligible for most (not all) financial aid that is available to other students. However, as the bill moves forward, this may change. Given that the DREAM Act is really about education, it's important to provide all the necessary supports to make a college education possible for every student, regardless of their immigration status. Financial aid is an important part of that.

Maricela: Access to financial aid is an important part of the DREAM Act. One of the ways that students could gain residency through the DREAM Act is by completing two years of college. Since financial aid makes higher education more affordable, this provision in the bill essentially helps ensure that greater numbers of students are able to adjust their status through the bill if it were to pass. Members of Congress could remove the financial aid provision listed under the DREAM Act. However, we hope that they won’t since this would limit the number of students who could benefit from the bill.
What is their problem. This bill is not completely about education. If you dont have the money to go to college, you join the military, just like any other American. True we deserve the help just like any other American, but if this would help the cause I say go away with financial aid, leave the loans, thats enough.

I hope that they do. There are many opportunities for us to get funded. After all, are not we all DREAM students talented in some way or another? I think we can handle this on our own.

I therefore say no to the financial aid clause of the DREAM Act. And yes, there is always the military option.
