Man, it's all about money, everything is about supply and demand.

The border can never be secured enough to prevent illegal crossing as long as there is job magnet in the US.
Moreover, US govt will have to spend a fortune just to make the boarder a little bit more secure.
And 40% of undocumented here are not even crossed from the border, they are visa overstay.
Border security is a political argument, while guest work program is the sensible solution.

So all of your jibber jabber/time wasting posts and its all concluded with my earlier post.

Sealing the border is piece of cake if US really tried it.

Drones + Automatic motion detecting turrets + ground mines.

Just ground mines alone would do the job.

E-Verify for every job + handsome reward for reporting illegals. And see their numbers plunge.

It's flabbergasting to me that people who they or their family came to this country in order to seek work and find a better life are clamoring to stop other people to do the same as soon as they sense they are about to get their take.

It's as if they are essentially saying "don't treat us like we want to treat the ones who want to come after us on our footsteps".

It's a very selfish view of the world and it lacks the empathy that you are asking from others to give to your plight.

Never mind that most likely it's bad economics predicated on wrong Malthusian understanding of the world. In a market economy, jobs aren't finite. A job creates its own demand.

What separates the US economy from let's say the Guatemalan economy is that the US economy has a better set of institutions which in turn allows respect of property rights, makes contracts enforceable and allows entrepreneurship to thrive. The same Guatemalan who can't make it in Guatamela because of corruption, fear of getting robbed and job killing regulations can make a living in the US. Conversely, if the whole world could magically adopt and enforce US rules and regulations in their economy, it would thrive dramatically. Alas, that's impossible.

I think that the best arguments against illegal migration are cultural not economic.

But like I said, if you are against more illegal immigration -for the people after you, not yourself- at least don't be a jerk.

Even if he is serious, it'd be a fantastically expensive venture to create a minefield 3000 miles wide. Furthermore, minefields are only useful in preventing rapid mass crossings (ie: an entire battalion crossing into your territory under cover of darkness). Anyone with a stick can slowly poke in front of them and discover mines without setting them off. Another solution is modifying a tractor to detonate mines (ie: http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/fl...rael-1950s.jpg)

You'd need constant supervision on the border to make a minefield useful. Your billion dollar minefield would be defeated with a coyote leading a few goats on a leash in front of him :P

Oh, and the lawsuits when a US citizen steps on a mine would drive the cost up like crazy.
