The Senate Judiciary Committee will begin marking up the so-called Gang of Eight comprehensive immigration reform legislation on May 9, the panel’s chairman announced Thursday.

Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) said any amendments to the legislation, formally known as the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013, will be made public on the committee’s website before the markups begin.

The chairman predicted that dozens of amendments could be filed, so several subsequent markup dates have been scheduled: May 14, May 16, May 20, and any time after that may be needed to finish the legislation.

Leahy asked senators on the panel to file all amendments to the bill by Tuesday, May 7, by 5 p.m.

The committee, which has jurisdiction over immigration legislation in the Senate, has held six hearings this year on immigration reform – the latest on Tuesday, when Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano testified on the Gang of Eight bill.

Oh, God, this is going to take forever, I feel bipolar every time I read something regarding this legislation. I am racked with anxiety when I think about the timeline and that it may not be until 2015 before we get approved (Six months for the border-security certification and six months for RPI). We, the over-30 crowd, are looking at more than a year from now to be authorized - if this passes. Then something new gets published giving hope; an hour later something gets published and I get discouraged. It is a sheer genetic miracle that I still look young.

What exactly does "marking up" the bill mean? Getting it ready to be voted on?

Getting it ready to be sent to the Senate Floor where it will be debated on by the full Senate membership. That's where the action will be. I see an end of may or early June final vote.

Reasonable timeline guesstimate, but if it takes that long for the Senate alone...then this may just end up being prolonged to November...

I still think by August everything should be passed and complete...but I dunno.

From what Nancy Pelosi has been saying, this could be wrapped by August.
