Spurs Answer Racist Response To Latino National Anthem Singer By Letting Him Sing

When Darius Rucker canceled plans to sing the national anthem ahead of Game 3 of the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs asked Sebastien De La Cruz to do the honors. De La Cruz, an 11-year-old Mexican-American, is a San Antonio resident who appeared as a singer on America’s Got Talent last year, and he didn’t disappoint.

That the Spurs chose a Latino boy in a mariachi suit quickly became a controversy, with social media users asking why an “illegal alien” was singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and why he was “dressed like such a little Mexican.” One Twitter user posited that “They prolly made this Mexican sing to stay in America.”

Aw, I know this little kid, he shouldn't be a topic of controversy. He wears his clothes in show of his pride and people should respect that. Obviously we have racist people who would say anything and be disrespectful, I hope somebody comes out and says something about that.

I'm the first to tell people leave your Mexican flags at home, but this kid was singing the US national anthem. His clothes represented the city of San Antonio. There was no justification to his bullying.

Likewise. I am surprised this is even an issue (well, not surprised from a racism standpoint, but from a "why the fuck does this even matter standpoint").

Kid was born here.. If he wanted to wear a sombrero with a North Korean flag hanging out his ass he could. I don't even understand why this is an issue? Let the fucking kid be isn't this country about freedom of speech and expression?

If your skin is brown, they'll automatically assume you weren't born here. By wearing something like Mexican clothes, you're removing all doubts in theirs pathetic minds. If it was a white kid wearing Irish clothes, or even Mexican clothes for that matter, it wouldn't have been a "controversy."
