Bachmann: Boehner will use ‘loophole’ to pass immigration in the House

On Laura Ingraham’s Tuesday radio show, outgoing Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann predicted that although Speaker of the House John Boehner has vowed to adhere to the Hastert Rule to pass immigration reform, “there’s still a loophole that the speaker might allow himself.”

Following the Hastert Rule would mean Boehner would not hold a vote on a bill that lacks the support of a majority of the Republican caucus. Bachmann said while Boehner will likely follow it with the version of the bill that originates in the House, once it goes to committee to reconcile differences between the House bill and the Senate’s version, all bets are off.

“I don’t think we have a definitive on that yet,” Bachmann said. “I think there’s still a loophole that the speaker might allow himself — that he won’t hold himself to the Hastert rule. In the shorthand, this is what I think is going to happen — the very bad bill is going to be in the Senate. We’re going to have a Trojan Horse bill that will look very good. It will look like border security in the House. Conservatives will vote for it in the House. Both bills will go to conference committee. The guts will get pulled out of the good bill. Amnesty will get put in. The Senate will pass it. It will go to the House. Nancy Pelosi will deliver all of the Democrat votes and all John Boehner has to do is deliver the committee chairs that hold the gavel.”
Technically this would be the conference report Bachmann is talking about.....however the conservatives with the loudest voices seem to be promoting inaction more than anything!

It could be the case that there'll be enough (I don't know if it'll be a majority but close enough) Republicans who "oppose" the bill officially but tacitly support the bill sort of like the Hurricane Sandy vote. I think it's to our advantage that the conservatives are split on this issue instead of united like previous efforts at immigration reform.

Speaker Boehner is in an unenviable position though. If and when the Senate bill passes, there'll be so much pressure on him to pass it in the House, which from all articles is the Dem strategy.

Hmmmm, I think this is what Rep. Bachmann is worried about. From the NYT:

Quote:
Despite his assurances, Mr. Boehner would not say whether he would also require majority Republican support on any legislation to emerge from a conference negotiating process with the Senate.

“We’ll see when we get there,” he said.

Imagine this: you are a 10 year old hispanic boy, and one day in school the teacher asks you: what would you like to become when you are an adult? The boy replies a few choices, an architect or a police officer. after 8 years, this kid finishes high school successfully and realizes his aspirations cannot be pursued because of his legal situation. All the investment made by taxpayers and most importantly by his family is wasted, his future is predetermined to a life of economic struggle due that in today's economy it is necessary to obtain post-secondaty education. It is time to measure dreams and aspiration with the same yardstick!!! Let's urge Senate to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
