Immigration Subcommittee to Hold Hearing on Illegal Immigrants Brought as Kids

Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., the Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee will hold a hearing on addressing the immigration status of illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States as children. To date, the House Judiciary Committee has held nearly a dozen hearings on immigration issues and has approved four bills that improve our immigration system and strengthen the enforcement of our immigration laws. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) released the statements below on tomorrow’s hearing.

Chairman Goodlatte: “As part of the step-by-step approach that the House Judiciary Committee is taking to address immigration reform, the Committee will consider how to provide a legal status to those who were brought illegally to the U.S. as children by their parents. These children came here through no fault of their own and many of them know no other home than the United States. Any successful immigration reform plan must improve our legal immigration programs, strengthen border security and the interior enforcement of our immigration laws, and find a way to fairly deal with those who are currently in the country unlawfully."

Subcommittee Chairman Gowdy: “This hearing is part of the step-by-step process the House is pursuing to carefully examine aspects of our immigration system. Those who are in the country unlawfully are not a homogeneous group. One of the clearest examples is those who were brought here as children who did not knowingly break our laws. This is an opportunity to explore solutions for these children who have contributed to our country and want to continue to do so. As we continue to look at immigration reform, border security, robust interior enforcement, and restoring respect for the rule of law are the only guarantee to finding a long-term solution and earning the confidence of the American public.”

Tomorrow's hearing will have two witness panels. The first panel includes:
• The Honorable Mike Coffman, United States House of Representatives;
• The Honorable Jeff Denham, United States House of Representatives;
• The Honorable Cory Gardner, United States House of Representatives; and
• The Honorable Luis Gutierrez, United States House of Representatives.

Witnesses for the second panel include:
• Dr. Barrett Duke, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention;
• Ms. Margie McHugh, Migration Policy Institute;
• Ms. Pamela Rivera, Washington, D.C.; and
• Ms. Rosa Velazquez, Arkansas Coalition for DREAM.

I see nothing unusual concerning this hearing judging by the witness list.Usually when the House GOP has a 'hearing' concerning a particular subject concerning immigration it has usually been more on the anti side with the witness list,which is not reflected here.
