As Hurricane Harvey nears the Texas coast, thousands of people are evacuating along the state’s major highways to escape 125 mile per hour winds and “catastrophic flooding” that the US government predicts will accompany the storm.

In an unusual move, Border Patrol checkpoints, which check individuals’ documents to make sure they are legal residents of the US, will stay open as the storm approaches, the Customs and Border Protection agency said Friday in an emailed statement:

U.S. Border Patrol checkpoints in the path of Hurricane Harvey in Texas will close as state highways close. These closures will occur in a manner that ensures the safety of the traveling public and our agents. Border Patrol checkpoints that are outside of the path of the hurricane will remain operational. CBP will remain vigilant against any effort by criminals to exploit disruptions caused by the storm.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) highest priorities are to promote life-saving and life-sustaining activities, the safe evacuation of people who are leaving the impacted area, the maintenance of public order, the prevention of the loss of property to the extent possible, and the speedy recovery of the region. Anyone in the path of this storm should follow instructions from their local officials and heed any warnings as this dangerous storm approaches.

In previous storms, including Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Issac in 2012, the border patrol agency temporarily suspended its enforcement procedures.

Ahead of Hurricane Matthew, the Department of Homeland Security said there will be no immigration enforcement initiatives or checkpoints, because immigration and border agencies’ “highest priorities are to promote life-saving and life-sustaining activities, the safe evacuation of people who are leaving the impacted area, the maintenance of public order, the prevention of the loss of property to the extent possible, and the speedy recovery of the region.”

Hurricane Harvey is expected to make landfall on eastern Texas and impact the state’s coastal areas from the lower tip until Louisiana. Evacuation routes from the coast were already showing heavy traffic on Friday afternoon:

Several of these evacuation routes go right through Border Patrol checkpoints, including one on Route 44 in Corpus Christi and another on Route 35 heading up to San Antonio:

Civil rights activists said the new policy was cruel. It also could result in avoidable fatalities, if some families with illegal immigrant members choose not to evacuate the storm zone.

“This is a disgusting move from the Border Patrol that breaks with past practices,” American Civil Liberties Union director of immigration policy and campaigns Lorella Praeli said. “The Border Patrol should never keep checkpoints open during any natural disasters in the United States. Everyone, no matter the color of their skin or background, is worth saving.”

Authorities on Friday sought to reassure undocumented immigrants seeking shelter during the storm.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said people would not need to show identification in order to access shelters.

“That will not be an issue,” Abbott said during an interview on MSNBC, saying this was his understanding based on instructions from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. “What everyone is focused on right now is doing all we can to protect life.”

Federal officials also sought to dispel concerns that could potentially keep people from going to shelters. In a joint statement, the Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agencies said they did not plan to conduct any “non-criminal” immigration actions at places where people might seek shelter.

“Routine non-criminal immigration enforcement operations will not be conducted at evacuation sites, or assistance centers such as shelters or food banks,” the agencies said in a joint statement. “The laws will not be suspended, and we will be vigilant against any effort by criminals to exploit disruptions caused by the storm.”

The agencies said their “highest priorities are to promote life-saving and life-sustaining activities” as well as to help people evacuate and recover.

In addition, Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees held in Port Isabel Detention Center — a facility in Los Fresnos, Tex., not far from the Gulf of Mexico — would be temporarily moved to other facilities away from the storm’s projected path.

I saw this and it was really weird.

So apparently, Abbott went on the Twitter or something and said that everyone must evacuate from Corpus Christie to Houston. The local authorities in or around Houston contradicted him by practically saying "Eat shit, Greg" (I'm paraphrasing, btw). They said that Houston isn't in any danger other than the usual flooding and told folks to "ride it out". They also mentioned that ICE would be on the look out, and won't cease because of the storm like they did in previous storms.

My thoughts and prayers go to the folks located in the affected counties.

So that's how you get the immigrant community to cooperate w/law enforcement? Glad they're keeping them safe.

In better news: suck it Abbot!

OH MY GOD....

Yet another alarmist and misleading headline... come on guys stop falling for this, read the entire article, and think critically...I disagree with Trump's claims of "fake news", but it is also very clear that the media is going above and beyond to construe things in a way that makes Trump's administration as more evil than it actually is (I believe it is evil).

It clearly says that checkpoints outside of the path will remain operational. So checkpoints that don't have to close won't close.

Yeah, just went and googled this since the above was haphazardly written. Basically checkpoints will remain open (which makes it hard to evacuate a city) but most just got to shelters any way.

I pictured BP using the opportunity of people moving around to set up checkpoints every where. This is not the case.

Even if they were allowed to pass through before the hurricane, it would mean they can't go back to their homes because once the sun is out, they'll check them for sure.
