A family member of mine will be leaving the US in November back to Mexico and would like to travel by plane-Does anyone know if he will need a passport to leave the country? He's a Mexican Citizen & has no status here so he's worried that he could be picked up by immigration at the airport on his way out or that he may not be allowed to board the plane.

As long as you have a passport from your own country, you can go back to it. They are not going to stop you from voluntarily leaving.

He needs a passport...

Mainly because he can be a target for the Mexican immigration authorities. Ask him to follow common sense and get the right documentation.

No Mexican passport, he does have an ID from Mexico. As far as I know, you need 2 forms of ID at airports in US.

TSA may or may not let him board the plane.

He should get his Mexican passport.

He needs to get a Mexican passport. Ask him to set up an appointment at the Mexican embassy and to put together his application money. It is illogical to put himself at risk because of something he can get in one hour.

So if he was to be deported, ICE would have gotten him a passport?

They contact the Mexican consulate which issues an emergency passport. There are however very serious consequences that arise from being deported as opposed to just leaving on your own.

he needs a Mexican passport. have him find the consulate nearest to him here: http://www.mexonline.com/consulate.htm

he should call and set up an appointment. or ask if they take walk-ins. the process is relatively simple and fast. it also is not too expensive, especially if he gets the one for 3 years.
