I agree to some extent. But the merit based legalization is just an excuse GOP is using to reduce immigration. The version that those two GOP guys came out with was totally unreasonable (I forget the fancy ass name they gave their bill....all these bills' names are confusing). Half of us wouldn't qualify based on those requirements. And their plan would hurt the economy - not help.

And while merit based immigration makes a lot of sense, there are definite advantages to family based immigration. It's what has helped the US economy grew and why it's relatively more stable than Canada or Australia (among other factors).

The age-out problem that kids over 21 have on their parents' applications - happens in Canada as well. So the merit based immigration systems in those countries aren't perfect.
