President Trump on Thursday laid out his demands for an immigration deal to Republican senators, making clear he doesn't expect Congress to build a physical 2,200-mile concrete wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Instead, the president wants Congress to increase security along the border by ratcheting up patrols, surveillance and fencing, in return for relief for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program recipients in an immigration deal that could be tied to the 2018 spending bill.

“People want to paint that it’s some 2,000-mile long, 30-foot-high wall of concrete. That’s not what he means and not what he tries to say,” said Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), who met with Trump at the White House Thursday.

“There’s going to be border fencing in some areas, there’s going to be vehicular barricades, there’s going to be technology, there’s going to be greater manpower in some areas,” he added.

Lankford said Trump has been clear “in private.”

Trump told lawmakers to end chain migration and the visa lottery program as part of a possible deal with Democrats to protect an estimated 800,000 Dreamers from deportation.

FYI, he is totally saying different things in public and private. whatever they are talking about in private is whats going to happen.

so stop freaking about that he is "insisting on a wall" and that its a no no for Democrats.

also, there is no interior enforcement on here to the babies here crying thinking they are trading their parents in for legalization.

Dem love chain migration and the visa lottery program. it is understandable why trump hate chain migration. But, visa lottery.. come on trump, you can limit people. I also don't like chain migration because it hurt more than help u.s. ( do some research if you don't believe me )

i dont think Trump will get chain migration, he will prolly only get Border Security and the end of the visa lottery program.

Border walls are never going to be given by Democrats even for DACA. Trump knows it. Republicans know it. They just keep insisting on it because Trump ran on that for his campaign. In some sense, they have to.

So, unless they have no intention of taking care of the DACA situation, they will eventually go with a bill without border wall funding.

As for chain migration, an NPR politics reporter said that there was not much of an appetite to touch the issue even among Republicans. Also, dealing with the chain migration issue complicates the discussion because it is not a simple matter and brings a bigger immigration debate than the DACA situation itself.

They will definitely get border security. I think Democrats may give visa lottery although it is unfortunate... because it is one way of ensuring diversity among immigrants.

re #DACA, Flake told Pence over dinner in Nov. that he would vote for tax reform—in exchange for the White House enacting permanent protections for DREAMers. Pence made the promise then and there.

You understand ending chain immigration is not going to happen right? That shit is 10x harder than passing a healthcare bill.

Visa lottery is the easiest to end, then further reducing H1B is next.
