Congress is close to landing a long-term solution to immigration reform with the approaching deadline President Donald Trump set on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, U.S. Rep. Fred Upton says.

Upton, R-St. Joseph, sat down with The Herald-Palladium Editorial Board on Friday to discuss several topics from DACA’s current status to his decision to forego a Senate run.

DACA, an Obama administration policy, seemed to be on life support when the Trump administration announced in September it would end the program that protects a portion of undocumented immigrants from deportation.
Quote:
While Trump met with a bipartisan group earlier this week and gave a positive update concerning DACA, a few days later he tweeted the immigration policy had taken a step backward.

“(Trump’s tweeting) is up and down. It’s a little bit like a metronome,” Upton said, mimicking the device with his finger. “I’ve been involved in immigration talks for a number of years now, and I can say we’re close.”

In Congress, Upton said there are four criteria being discussed in response to immigration reform. DACA, border security, chain migration and the visa lottery system have all been on the table, he said.

Quote:
Upton said. “…There have been some flair-ups with the president’s language. But I think the train will be back on the track.”

Upton addressed talk of the wall that Trump has been an advocate of erecting along the U.S.-Mexico border. Upton said the last he heard, Trump is hoping to spend $18 billion over the next decade.

“No one ought to be talking about a wall (that stretches) for 2,000 miles,” Upton said. “…This would be a face-saving measure, so Trump could call it a wall. Others will say it makes the borders secure, but it’s dumb. You can see how this thing is going to come together.”

Upton on Trump’s crude comments about Haiti and African nations:

“When you go in to see him, there’s a box you put your phone in. No one is allowed to take a recording device in with them. What he allegedly said (Thursday) is inappropriate. It doesn’t help, particularly on an issue where we need to be working together.”

Key to House schedule just published by McCarthy: “Consideration of Legislation Making Further Appropriations for FY 2018..Additional Legislative Items are Possible.” That’s an interim spending bill & perhaps a DACA/border security pkg.
