It's a common slang in the East Coast, nearly every ethnicity says it and nobody gets offended. Sort of like how people say "vato" In the West Coast. I imagine.

I live on the east coast and I’ve never heard anyone say it before.

Here's the lexicon police out to tell people what words they can and cannot say. Sounds very authoritarian. Let people build their own lexicon and use words freely as they wish. Let them deal with the consequences, should it get them it hot water.
