The REAL ID Act allows states to issue temporary (i.e., limited-term), REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses and ID cards to applicants who provide valid, documentary evidence that they have “approved deferred action status.” [Sec. 202(c)(2)(B)(viii)] Under the REAL ID regulation, applicants with approved deferred action who hold valid Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) and Social Security Numbers (SSNs) may qualify to receive temporary REAL ID driver's licenses and ID cards. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) Program standardized and expedited the process for obtaining these supporting identification documents for individuals with Deferred Action seeking REAL IDs. Individuals with approved Deferred Action, valid EADs and valid SSNs may continue to hold temporary (limited-term) REAL IDs until their expiration. In any case, REAL ID compliant states may continue to issue noncompliant licenses and IDs to individuals with or without lawful status, including deferred action, as defined under the REAL ID Act.

Exactly, the only real time to get one is when you become a permanent resident or citizen. I think this and Global entry are the first two things I am applying for when I become Permanent.

So are there going to be two license types now? Regular and REAL ID? Or will they all eventually convert to REAL ID as people start expiring and go in to renew?

My DL has always been tied to my work permit and I hate it!! My dL always ends up being expired for about a week or 2 because the database doesn’t update new EAD cards until the beginning of each month. For example, last time I got approved in December and my EAD was valid as of March so I had to wait for about a week once March hit for my EAD to show up as valid in their system.

Can anyone answer this question? I thought people with DACA couldn't get Real ID?

I'm in NJ and my license expires in March. Do I request REAL ID or will they automatically give me one when I go in to renew it?

So I just looked it up on the CA DMV website and it states that beginning January 22, 2018 they will offer two cards, the READ ID card and a 'Federal Non-Compliant DL/ID' I think this means that the 'Federal Non-Compliant DL/ID' will have "FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY" stamp on it like the one for illegal immigrants?!?!
