She took a risk and hoped it would get media attention. And it did and she’s out of detention now. If she’s inside the USA that means she was allowed with inspection and that’s all she needs to adjust now with out leaving the country.

Shes from Peru which means she most likely came legally here with a visitor visa as a kid, she couldve adjusted without leaving the country.
