I think they made the right choice. There is a lot of fraud in the immigrant community when it comes to tax filing. I know of so many that claim dependents in Mexico, and they pay zero taxes when here I am paying a lot of taxes as a single person.

... Dad has SSN and mom has ITN. In addition, dad was told to stay at home with no pay since Cuomo ordered shelter-in-place in NY. Oh yeah, they live in NYC. I lucked out as well. I haven't filed my 2019 return yet but I switched jobs in December 2018. Signing bonus at the new firm puts me just a hair above $99k.

I actually work in a lab that does direct testing of covid19. Laboratorians don't get much appreciations unfortunately
