Yes. Filing 1040 is an absolute requirement for everyone here. The 1040-NR is for individuals who are engaging in business in America and are not from here. What we have to understand is the definition of "resident" is completely different per the IRS compared to like immigration. We are all resident aliens for tax purposes because we meet the substantial presence test.

Yes. But those individuals who file the 1040 using ITIN will not be eligible for the stimulus check unfortunately

No I don't think you have to apply or anything. They just know. It should be a direct deposit, if you've been getting direct deposit/direct debit for payment in your 2019 tax return or if you haven't filed yet, 2018 tax return.

Whatever information you gave the government to send you your refund is what they will use for this. You will get a letter stating you will get one and what you can do if you don’t receive it
