There's only one article of impeachment. The trial won't take that long.
Exactly, even if there is no conviction a vote puts the republicans on record for supporting the insurrection or not.

Trump appointed judges told Trump's legal team they didn't have evidence. Scotus didn't take up Trump's challenge.

I didn't see that crowd as very powerful. The police just wasn't prepared. The people who stormed in are being arrested and prosecuted.

A trial without a conviction won't really mean anything to Trump or his base.

Again, to me it's a waste of time. But, I respect your opinion.

Incitement of insurrection to the left. To the right, First Amendment protected Speech that was taken too far by some crazy asses. The left will always hate Trump and the GOP. The right won't give a damn. What's new?

Well, I mean McConnell is on the right, so is Lisa Murkowski and others. They are not the wacko right but they are republicans and seem willing to convict to me. I guess we will see. But I think it’s important to let the process work itself through.

There is evidence that the police were purposely unprepared. Lives of Congress were in real danger from that crowd.

We are lucky not enough Trump loyalists were in place on the state level that the system still worked. If Trump had won, I'm uncertain if four years later that would have been the case.

Agreed. The Democrats need to proceed, and then we will see the outcome. Convicting Trump will depend if the GOP think it will be politically advantageous to continue to support Trump or not. There's very few who put country before party.

Trump is a disgrace to the Republican party and will be their demise if they don't purge him out.

One way of doing that is to prevent him from ever running again.

Besides getting rid of him there's the justice factor, people died because if him. He is a traitor, there are multiple instances where he acted illegally and got away with it. But no one should be above the law, not even a sitting president.

Convict him an set an example for future generations to see.

This is key, because at the end of the day, Trump and people surrounding him have been massively incompetent - hence the reason they couldn't end DACA and have had so many other policies struck down by courts.

If Rs don't convict him, it leaves the door open for a more extreme, but smarter person to take over Trump's base (think J. Hawley), and really follow through on 'taking their country back'. We now know there's plenty of support from congressional Rs .

The Republican base still completely supports trump so any GOP senator voting to convict trump puts themself at risk of losing their next election. Senators may hate him but they love power more, they will not cast a vote that may throw themselves out of office.

At most you will get 5 GOP senators to convict him, then what. The motion fails and nothing happens other than wasted time. Trump will lose zero support from his base since they dont really have many values and morals to begin with.

At best, cap the trial to 3 days and mornings only. Limit the wasted time, and start getting bills written and voted on. America needs more help to fight covid and stimulate the economy.
