I have some questions regarding the ID/DL procedures in CA. I would appreciate some input or some direction if it has been covered recently.

I received my CA ID at the beginning of the month. It expires in 2018.

My question is: what happens to my ID card if I go in to take the written test next week? Will the employee punch a hole in it making it invalid? Or will they let me keep it unaltered?

The thing is that I want to take the written test and get my driving permit. Then, I'd like to practice for a few months before scheduling my behind-the-wheel test since I'm pretty new to driving right now.

I plan to call in on Monday to verify, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has done the same.

What do you guys think?

What are you talking about?

They only punch a hole if you have a license from another state or something.

You can have both, an ID and a DL. No issue with that.

Thanks. But, as you know, being a DACA beneficiary, this is my first time dealing with anything DMV.

I've read online that when you go in to renew your ID/DL, your soon-to-expire card is hole-punched. I've also seen pictures of it (people holding both their old and new DL's, and the old one has a hole in it).

Since my ID expires in 2018, I fear that my DL, whenever I do get it, will come with a 2-year expiration (reading the threads here, the DMV is not being consistent with expiration terms for EAD applicants). Therefore, I'd like to keep my ID, and I was wondering whether they would force me to relinquish it, pretty much.

Ooouuuchhh!!! That hurts. I've been driving for 8 years now. And by no means do I consider myself a driver with bad habits... I guess im one of the lucky ones then, I passed both my Writting test and Behind the wheel test on the 1st try.

Dont worry. They wont do anything to your ID. I have both. Im sure your DL will be for 5 yrs. the permit they give after you passed the written test is valid for one year but you gotta make sure that somebody with a CA License is always by your side. (it says so on the permit) Good luck. =D

Thank you!

Yeah, that's exactly why I want to my driving permit — so I can start practicing behind-the-wheel, and eventually take my driving test.

How did you process your ID/DL? Did you apply for both on the same visit, or did you get your ID first, and then applied for your DL?

EDIT: Oh, I see this information on your signature now. Congrats.

A different, though related question:

sweetDreams7 -- Did you have to take two pictures, or just one (so both your DL and DL have the same picture)?

Also, when I go in to take my written test, could I request that they use the picture they already have on file for my ID, or will they require that I take a new picture?

Thanks. I'm just wondering about these things.

Edit, misread the question. I actually don't know.

I do know they use the same pic if you make a DL and ID at the exact same time (like I did).

Lol, well it's somewhat true.

Passing the driving test is more about knowing that checklist they have infront of them, less about how to drive. I mean really, which driver cautiously checks the intersection on all sides on a green light?

Hey guys, has anybody who has applied for a drivers license have any tickets for driving without a license?? The reason I'm asking is I have a ticket for that plus the one that I got pulled over for, which was speeding. I haven't paid that ticket because it totals at around $1,000, so now I'm debating wether to pay it now or I'm wondering if it'll even affect me when I apply for a DL.

Pay the tickets!
Unpaid tickets become arrest warrants.
