I don't support tinkering with the constitution one way or another.

Fine by me if their trailer trash babies don't gain citizenship either.

O todos coludos o todos rabones.

Exactly. It's obvious that the Republicans are pandering to the racists and xenophobes. And they are hell bent on making things so bad for us, that we leave on our own.

How does ending birth right citizenship fix the problem of illegal immigration? Most people who are here and undocumented came here to work and provide for the families that they already have. If they do have USC kids, those kids were not the deciding factor in coming to the U.S., in the first place. Even Lou Dobbs has come out and said this is unreasonable. Now, when you've got him thinking you've gone too far to the right, it is definitely time for you to rethink what is coming out of your mouth.

Yes, I think anybody who is serious about the DREAM Act would have to oppose this, because it will only create a larger pool of DREAMers in the future. I don't see how we can support a compromise with this included for short term gain--to get everybody here a chance to become legal--only to exacerbate the problem in the future. This will not solve any problem other than placating people on the far, far right. Moreover, it is so impossible to put through, it would effectively kill immigration reform for the near future if it becomes a real Republican demand.

Much of the point behind this could be done legislatively anyway. If they want to keep these kids from being "anchor babies" they could put a provision in the CIR bill that bars kids born in this country of two illegal parents from ever petitioning on their parents' behalf. As far as the welfare thing goes, if the kids are US citizens, they should be treated the same as other US citizens. In reality, the problem would then be welfare: if Republicans don't like welfare, let them pass legislation to get rid of that.

By the way, I heard that there is a rumor floating around on the right that Graham only suggested this because somebody is threatening to out him if he doesn't propose it. I don't believe that, because it seems more likely that this is his way of kicking off his reelection campaign in South Carolina.
