Well this has been discussed in another thread but with an APPROVED I-797 you can get your ID/DL in Cali w/o a ssn. There are some parts of cali were it's not immigrant friendly, a bit close to balboa there's Costa Mesa were it was one of the first cities to pass e-verify and pass the secure communities. Another example, the major of Hesperia started to rant about DACA and how the dmv shouldn't issue DLs to anyone who would be approved by DACA.

Pointless act, California already gives DLs to I-766 holders.

Do you have a link? I read on the dmv website that a ssn is required, unless one presents " an cceptable birthdate/legal presence document." Is that what a I766 is? I'm a bit confused :-p

The point is, we're going to get our SSN anyway if we're approved for DACA.
What this bill does is to just make super sure that nobody denies us based on their lack of knowledge or understanding of DMV rules.

California offers in-state tuition AND state financial aid to undocumented students. To not also offer eligible DREAMers the chance to get a DL would be ridiculous.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures...cts/ffdl05.htm

List of Acceptable Birth Date/Legal Presence Documents:
...
Employment Authorization Card (issued by USCIS).
...

Social security number will be given to you by SSA if you have a valid work permit card, file out a SS-5 form, check the box for "legal alien allowed to work", bring it to SSA together with your EAD. They should mail you in the card, one which says not valid for employment without DHS authorization, with your number within a week. If your EAD expires and you won't/can't renew it, the social security number stays yours forever.

thanks for the info! by the way, do you know if you get your social security number the day you submit the SS-5 form at the SSA? Or do you have to wait for the SS card to come in?

Well bureaucracy takes its time, you'll have to wait for the card. Besides DMVs won't take your word for it that your number is xxx-xx-xxxx, you'll need proof.
