Not sure if troll or genuinely ignorant. Because they already followed the rules in coming here and those who didn't should be deported. Thanks to the generosity and hard work of many people, if this bill passes, they will forgive you for breaking the rules but want reassurance that you will at least make a small bit of effort in accepting this as your country. The least you can do is speak the language.

By the way, even those who came here legally have to speak English if they apply for citizenship.

I completely agree! While it might be a little harder for our older relatives/friends to learn the language, I believe it's not impossible. This is a small thing that they would ask for.

I feel like this should have been included in the original language of the bill. It's common sense for immigrants to learn the language of the country that they are migrating to, legally or otherwise.

My landlords are a Mexican couple who have been USCs (or at least LPRs) for a long time, and neither of them can carry a basic conversation in English with me. Explaining something as little as, "If you don't pay the Internet bill this month, the internet will die" takes 15 minutes. Something like that paints immigrants in a negative light.

I think it's all talk to get Republicans on board, they might include it but will it be enforced and if its enforced it will probably be a simple dumb thing.

I'm not ignorant to the fact that there already is an English Language Requirement for Naturalization. But my point is there are already Green Card holders, many of whom I know, who still don't speak the language! I believe there shouldn't be a separate standard only for those undocumented seeking RPI, if you're going to have a requirement like this, then to either implement it to all immigrants. OR we could continue with the status quo of only having the requirement for those seeking Naturalization.

That was my argument, my two cents. I didn't need to be insulted nor be called a troll. Thank You.

We used to have a Mexican guy at work who got his green card because of the original amnesty. His job application was filled out perfectly with nice handwriting so we interviewed him and found that the guy barely spoke English yet liked the sound of his voice. It was obvious his kid had filled out the application. It was like pulling teeth trying to figure out what he was saying. He seemed like a good guy and we hired him but even though he was a hard worker and knew the job, he could not interact with customers at all. We'd always have to set him up with an English speaking employee (and pay 2 salaries instead of 1) and it became nothing but trouble until one day they got in a fight.

He was with us for 3 years and I even got the pamphlet from the local community college for adult English classes at night and told him the Instructor was even Hispanic and he never once made any effort to learn. On job sites, he listened to Spanish stations too. He had no intention of ever being part of this country but just liked living here and the paycheck. That paints us all in a negative light I think.

Exactly My Point! Why not make it a requirement for "all immigrants" prior to getting a green card, instead of having a separate process for undocumented immigrants. I truly believe that those living here undocumented won't have the problem of wanting to learn the language in order to stay here. Like I said before, I'm not against the amendment.

I see your point...I'd agree with that. Many like international students or those getting work visas already are required to know English through the universities or companies they attend though. Mail order brides are a crap shoot.
