"I'm not at all saying all conservatives in the south are like this, there are quite a few that go out of their way to make immigrants a part of the community. "

No, I live in Arizona, and I can't remember if a conservative here ever tried to do anything to make immigrants a part of the community. Your initial assessment is accurate.

I'm guessing you're not in Texas. I don't know of a single Texas conservative who has ever done anything to help immigrants. Not the two senators and certainly not the "You Lie!" guy in the House or anybody else. Even the old "nice" senator was against us. As sad as it sounds, GW was the only Republican who actually kind of liked us.

That is really unfortunate. It seems sometimes as though only the Bushes are sympathetic.

There are some factions within what would otherwise be considered left leaning groups that are hostile to immigrants. Labor groups are among these. Instead of becoming allies with undocumented workers, they choose to scapegoat them for problems causes by corporations.

So while left leaning politicos tend to be more sympathetic in general to immigrants, let's remember that this hostility to immigrants is far from limited to conservatives.

The only Republicans I've met who 'like' - and I use the term loosely, here- immigrants are business owners (who benefit from our labor and work ethic) and Evangelists (more parishioners - I don't know of the term is accurate- for their mega-churches).

I live in Nevada and it is very conservative, they make it clear that they don't want us here. When I was canvassing for Obama in urban neighborhoods I got called a lot of not nice things, and these are Caucasians living next to all shades of brown. Were here to stay they need to follow the old saying "If you can't beat 'em join 'em" lol
