I've heard that for decades from anti-immigration people. Some people are truly ignorant and may not mean harm and when someone explains to them how they don't want to be illegal and how it's impossible or damn near impossible for them to gain legal status, they change their view but with the Trump base, that's a no go. They don't want to hear it.
