A bipartisan group of senators led by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) met Wednesday afternoon to explore the possibility of immigration reform legislation that could address the surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Senators praised the meeting afterward as “constructive” and a promising start but said they didn’t reach agreement on any core elements.

I hope SEIU and other unions jump on this and hold Durbin et al accountable.
Anyone notice Illinois and the states the other Republican senators represent are all major agricultural hotbeds? I am beginning to think that they keep sabotaging a wider legalization program so they can keep undocumented labor.

There is an essential workers immigration bill that truly needs to pass as well.

Also the border *refugee* surge although related does not preclude recognition/legalization of the long-term undocumented.

Most of their assumption is from data gathered from the Regan era. To this date, Regan was the only modern-day president to get any kind of immigration reform done, I believe they legalized over 2.7M people. This leads to a massive surge to the border and many of the GOP credit the 11M illegal immigrants to that act.

Because of that, any kind of immigration bill in the GOP's eyes needs border security since it will lead to a massive influx of people to the border to get citizenship. Think of what's happening right now at the border times 1000. Those are the assumptions being made.
