Clinton left office with higher approval ratings than President Reagan (66-65% for Clinton to 64-63% for Reagan) fueled by the booming economy in marked contrast to what we have now. These Presidents do have comparable scandals, but people remember Monica more than Iran-Contra because of its salaciousness and because its more recent. But people also remember the booming economy too. That's why you have Obama re-assembling the Clinton economic team that Clinton assembled. Before Clinton, the Democrats were not trusted on the economy at all because of Carter's performance (Carter has a great Ex-Presidency though), and because of the memory of the 90's economy and how well it ran, that helped Obama win the Presidency along with Obama's unique gifts.

As for Illinois, if there is a special election, I hope Obama campaigns for the Democrat, who I think should win because of the blue-ness of Illinois. A Republican can't take his seat, that's for sure!
You're right, the economy trumps scandals, and not too many people don't miss his administration. When I said they were successful, I was referring to the beginning of his presidency, when they brought up things like his Rhodes scholarship/60s activism, Whitewater and "don't ask, don't tell" to try to paint him as some liberal radical. It worked because the GOP swept to victory in the 1994 midterm elections (Mr. Gingrich's "Contract with America"), taking control of both houses for the first time since 1954. Comparing Clinton to Obama around the start of his term, however, I don't think the GOP is going to be succesful in linking him to the Illinois scandal.

^ Oh ok, then yes, you're right. the Republicans pushed a lot of faux scandals early on in the Clinton Administration that unfortunately worked for the 1994 elections. But in 1994, there were also problems with corrupt Democratic members of Congress like Rep. Dan Rostenkowski (of Illinois), and that helped the Republicans to run unbelievably on clean government and reforming government.

I think "de-legitimized" is the incorrect term to use and would use "scorched Earth" politics instead. Fortunately, the public wised up a bit and Republican tactics backfired later on in the Clinton Administration. However, Gore and Kerry fell victim to unethical Republican attacks (although Gore did technically win through the popular vote and the Supreme Court conservatives stole the election for Bush by stopping the FL Supreme Court ordered recount).

I'm not too worried about Obama. He showed during the campaign that he can handle Republican attacks and make them seem desperate and petty. Bush's utter failure as a President helps to fuel the public distrust of the Republicans as well.

I love how Obama consistently elevates himself above Republican attacks, leaving them out in the cold.

The governor wants to still appoint a democrat to the vacant senate seat, will see how all of this plays out.
