another thing that's going to make it harder to pass. i disagree with this but at the same time we're going to be seeing some protests not just for CIR but as of why CIR wont include gays lesbians.

at this point i conform with what the rules CIR are going to be because i'm tired of waiting.

And once again, they just end shooting themselves in the foot.

You know what, we COULD hide our sexual preference and marry someone in order to obtain our documents. But you know what that is called? Marriage fraud. And as we all know, the U.S. Government very much frowns upon that.

But then they go and keep enforcing the same damn laws over and over again! So what do gay people have to do, again and again? Hide their sexuality, pretend to be hetero, marry and lie to the government. And what is that called again kids?!

So if the government doesn't want people lying to them, they should stop making laws that force us to do so! Do they just not get it?!

Regardless of what he called you, calling him that is just totally unnecessary. Act your ages people. We're all too old for this foolishness.

Exactly. Regardless of what he does to make this process "easier", those who are anti-immigration reform are going to do everything they can to stop CIR from passing. I'm really trying to understand Schumer's motivation for this decision, but when you look at the bigger picture, this may only backfire in the long run.

this is an entirely differently fight, no need to have it part of CIR. I agree with Schumer.

How many republicans do you think will support this being a part of CIR?

Democrats are elated Sen. Graham is willing to work with them on immigration, so they'd definitely try everything to accommodate his requests just so he'd put his signature on it, which means the final CIR bill would be MORE conservative. Sen. Graham has taken a lot of flack from the right for wanting to work with the Dems, so a gay component would probably not please him. Additionally, Sen. Graham, a life-long bachelor, has long battled rumors that he's gay. Imagine the social conservative wrath that would come his way if the final CIR bill included clauses to "import homosexuals".

I'm not happy about this, but if it makes the bill less controversial than it makes the bill less controversial. Homosexuals are gradually becoming more accepted, and the laws will eventually reflect that. Gay/lesbian undocumented immigrants will still get legalized if CIR passes. But seriously, if California really can't keep gay marriage, did you honestly expect CIR to acknowledge gay immigrant couples? Don't blame Schumer for that, he's actually trying--blame the bigots.

I understand he's excluding UAFA to gain Republican support (since Republicans dislike any kind of same-sex union and derivative benefits from those same partnerships). But, I'm considering the consequences it's exclusion could have for Democrats later on.

I'm saying that because one of the organizations that I work with has a strong LGBT membership. We've discussed this as a possibility when it comes to CIR and many people were saying how they feel like it would be throwing them under the bus. Yes, it would serve the greater good if CIR were to pass (I'm talking about the 12 million + here that are undocumented), but at what cost? And how long would it take for UAFA to be taken back up again?

Without any doubt in my mind, I believe Schumer is right on this one. I support same-sex marriage, but we have to take what we can get. Right now, given the political climate, comprehensive immigration reform is going to be monumentally difficult to pass, and any issues relating to same-sex marriage will only make it harder and scare off one or two or three moderate Democrats from supporting it.

The "all-or-nothing" point-of-view is impossible for me to comprehend. No bill that passes Congress, especially right now is going to be perfect, let alone great, and will have disappointments for real progressives.

The health care bill, as watered down as it was, stalled. Same-sex marriage is unfortunately a tough pill to swallow for a lot of ignorant and hateful people in this county and dragging the issue into comprehensive immigration reform would be a mistake; a poison that would help kill it, as if we didn't have enough trouble getting it done as it is.

This is a fight you have to realistically put off for now until more states recognize same-sex marriage and as a new generation of people take power.
