My proposal is like this:

1) Grant immediate unconditional green card to all 11 million undocumented workers.

2) Extend the amount of time to naturalization after earning the green card from 5 years to 20 years (For ALL green card holders, including both documented and undocumented).

Keep the heat up on the GOP and they will compromise to give legal status to the 11 million.

I think the compromise will come down to the hurdles, length, and benchmarks for the legalized immigrants in order to attain permanent residency.
Exactly.

In the grand scheme of things, if you have the momentum to do something, it's better to go for the ultimate solution. If Cantor was truly sincere about the DREAM Act, he would aggressively push the Speaker to bring it on the floor. Heck, it'd probably be on the floor right now. The problem is, he doesn't want to get it passed.

I hate to say it, but the Dream Act itself has become a red herring. It's a distraction to the overall premise and conclusion, which is CIR.

Absolutely.

Here's something positive to look at: We have never seen a contentious legislation with broad array of supporters, backed by the president, and failed.
Even the vitriolic health care law passed and even the debt ceiling proposal without broad republican support passed.
CIR has wider support than these and I seriously think it will only take a little more unified push and this will get done.

I also think that President Obama is pushing huge issues -- gun control, CIR, and fiscal legislations -- all at once so republicans won't have a chance to organize and mount counter strategies.

The White House a few days ago mentioned a 4-6 weeks deadline for proposals to be turned into legislation. This makes anyone reasonable to think that the President wants to get this done soon.

I see....just like the swiss, lol. That would obviously never happen though.

I think that both sides might agree with my immigration plan I've been thinking about.

A permanently renewable conditional residency for undocumented individuals who entered at least for a certain number of years ago.No individual can become a US citizen unless they have 'unconditional' permanent residency. The conditional residency path still counts towards meeting the requisite number of years for US citizenship but the conditions must be removed before the individual can become a Permanent resident.I think if the undocumented individual wants to remove the conditions on their Conditional Residency eventually an Employer or US citizen or Legal Permanent resident immediate relative would have to sign a modified I-751 form and modified I-864 affidavit of support. The timeline for which they can do that depends on when they entered the United States. If the individual entered before the implementation of the 1996 immigration laws the period should be set at 5 years before they can potentially remove conditions while all others would have to wait 10 years. It is done this way simply because of IIRIRA where it was a 5 year bar before the law was implemented and it implemented the 10 year bar when 1997 came around.

Mr. Cantor I I just turned 31, this legislation has been in the works since I was 19 years old.
It was introduced in 2001. When the 2010 version failed because of the fear mongering I was 27, what will you guys do in people that just turned 31.

Think of adults that have been screwed out of immigration benefits. Like when I turned 21 and after my mom had to pay all those fees to try to adjust my status, merrily your crappy system took me to wait in a 20 year line.

How exactly have they been "screwed" out?

Like did you actually try to do things "the right way" of fixing your status to say you got screwed?
