some activists tried to get the DREAM Act across the finish line last week. Gutierrez, the activist group Indivisible, and United We Dream — the biggest advocacy organization on the Hill for the DREAMers — all urged Democrats to reject the Trump-Pelosi-Schumer deal because it did not address DACA.

Still unclear is exactly how activists and Hill Democrats will succeed in forcing a congressional vote on the DREAM Act.

One long-shot approach, being spearheaded by Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, is to try to get enough signatures on a “discharge petition” — if 218 members sign it, then House Speaker Paul Ryan would be forced to call a vote on the DREAM Act. (Ryan has ruled out bringing up a “clean” vote on the DREAM Act himself.)

Another option is to try attaching — or refusing to support — other measures that might require Democratic votes. The National Defense Authorization Act, which funds the military, has to be reauthorized. The Child Health Insurance Program is another possible point at which Democrats could exercise their leverage, as is a flood insurance bill.

This is on Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer — if they fail to get the DREAM Act done, this is on them.”

So we've got democrats trying two different strategies

1) Durbin, Schumer, Pelosi -- let's see how we can compromise to get to 60+ votes in Senate and 218 in House (I think we have the votes in the house)

2)Rep. Luis Gutierrez and advocacy groups threatening to shut down government if a Clean DREAM Act isn't passed

What's the better strategy? Does it weaken us to have our allies try both? Curious on everyones thoughts.

the best way is to add DA as an amendment to the debt ceiling in 3 months, military reauthorizatiom, harvey/irma relief etc.

add it to must pass pass bills which need democratic votes! tbh they shouldve added it to the harvey/3 month extension of debt ceiling.

First thing they need to do is start a dialogue and compromise and add border security items to it. But go slowly without conceding too much. Secure the 60 + votes and add it to any bill in the following two months that requires 60 votes. If all of that fails, then add it to debt ceiling/budget in December

Great to be back and read that fucking congress has done nothing for us, after spending 48 hours with no sleep helping people at a fucking shelter, gettin poked with a needle while doin a glucometer and risking contracting HIV and HEP C cause the power ran out.

Fucking great.. fuck these fuckers I ain't waiting no more I do way too much for these assholes to not be able to stay.

I think it's frustrating for us bc we don't really know the plan. Of course I don't expect them to share the plan with us bc they would be letting their leverage go. I hope they really try to do whatever they can. We need to make sure they understand we NEED them to do this. There's no if and buts in this situation. Compromise is necessary in today's political climate.

It's amazing that you are doing that! We need to share your story with someone, the media, or senator Durban. We need your heroic act to be known. To show those racists the image of a real American!

I think a compromise would have a better chance and a much FASTER resolution. Remember that McConnell and Ryan still have to agree and bring the bill to the floor (unless using discharge petition in the house). If democrats were willing to trade wall funding for DA we would have a vote soon, because Trump would be all over it to fulfill his promise. The wall funding that passed in the house only cover about 70 miles of the border, they will need a lot more money in the future. If democrats agreed to the wall this process would go much faster.

However, I still think that if no compromise can be made. Democrats should attach DA to EVERY SINGLE bill until it passes. If by December nothing has been done, I totally agree with the shut down.

Their reply would be like "So what, we have citizens doing that too."
