It's authorized for FY 2017, however it's not open yet. The word is at the earliest it'll open April/May, but not 100%.

The memorandum I saw limits the languages to a shorter list, smaller number of caps (1200 for Army), as well as limited reserve slots.

For the already enlisted I don't think this affects it, however if you're waiting to enlist, hope that you can meet the new guidelines for it when they publish.

If there's a limit for the amount of people they'll recruit for a specific language they need, how do they pick who gets to stay? Is it first apply, first join?

Yes on the cap per language, and yes it's pretty much whoever gets through the enlistment process the quickest (meaning no medical holds, background holds, efficient recruiter, luck, etc.)

So it's authorized but not open. Should we get in contact with recruiters anyway? Have you seen the new guidelines?

For those of you that enlisted through the critical language route, what did the testing involve exactly? Do you get interviewed by someone who speaks the language? Is it written? Do you have to speak it perfectly?

It wouldn't hurt, but not all of them might process you. There's not much they can do until the program opens back up, maybe if they're willing you can get some initial paperwork and the pre-ASVAB , however can't do much more after that until it's official opened.

It's a phone interview, not looking for perfectly spoken however on a scale of 5, you have to get 2/2 (search OPI). If you can hold a casual conversation with family members or whomever in that language then there's a decent shot, if you try to learn a new language to pass it, it's probably unlikely.

Is Chinese still in the language list? If not, it would be bad news to me.

For now we're just hoping that MAVNI re-opens so the rest can jump in. I told most of my friends to join while it was still open but they didn't listen to me, thinking that HC will win, now reality strikes.
