It was really simple, I went to the office and once my number was called I told the lady that I have worked with a made up ssn and I want to transfer my benefits over to my new number. She then asked me if I had a ssn assigned to me and I gave her my legitimate ssn card with my CA DL. Then she asked me when I started working and where, at this point I whipped out my W2s and she started typing the info from them. She found right away earnings on that number with my name and she did some typing and was done in about 10 mins. That was it.

so here is a question i read about somewhere, not sure if it was on here. Since we file taxes every year and get only so much left while people with ssn's get so much more, can we get money back from previous years with the new ssn?

And thinking everything will be done automatically is incorrect because different agencies use ssn for different stuff. SSA will not send a memo to everyone that has your ITIN on file.
For taxes, it's your decision to notify the IRS of your new SSN. I called the IRS to ask about replacing ITIN with SSN and was told that it was not necessary to notify them. When you file your tax return using your new SSN, your ITIN will automatically link with your SSN since they have your information under their system. If anyone would like to reconfirm this, you can call the IRS toll free at 1800-829-1040.

btw thanks to the OP for the post. It is very helpful and has saved me from a couple of headaches. Thanks mate!
This sounds good... but i have a question, isn't it a really bad idea to connect your fake ssn to your legit one? for future adjustment of status purposes i mean.. i don't know it just doesn't sound like something good? ALSO even if the SS# is a random number, couldn't that be some legit person's SSN? It's a risk isn't it? Please someone enlighten me.

I have read here on DAP that there's legal precedent from the US Supreme Court that if you only used a fake number it's not considered identity theft and you should be fine. I asked two different SSA workers in two diff offices if there would be any penalties or if it would affect me, they both said no. So yeah...

yeah i heard that too, but i don't think there's a surefire way to check if my "fake" ssn that i bought on the streets didn't coincidentally belong to someone.. that's the part that worries me thanks for the reply though and i'm still investigating this myself
