Agriculture secretary presses Bush's immigration plan

By Olivia Munoz
ASSOCIATED PRESS

9:15 p.m. June 8, 2006

FRESNO – U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns came to this Central California farming hub Thursday to tout President Bush's proposed guest worker program, which he said would help identify the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country and improve their working conditions.
“Temporary workers are vital to agriculture. But we want to know who these workers are and where they come from,” Johanns told growers and other agriculture leaders.

AdvertisementBush's immigration plan – which includes the guest worker program, tighter border security and a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already in the country – has failed to win over a block of conservative Congress members.
“We don't believe in this notion that if you're here, all of a sudden all is forgiven,” Johanns said. “But someway, somehow we have to deal with this.”

A guest worker program would let employees speak up about working conditions without fear of losing their job or deportation, he said.

Johanns previously has spoken about the need for such a program to alleviate the burden on seasonal growers, who often can't find enough employees to harvest crops.

California leads the nation in many crops, many of them labor intensive, and up to half of all farmworkers do not have legal status, he noted.

“This is a state where the immigration issue can really be highlighted,” he said.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He will support a comprehensive reform and everything he is saying right now is just so he can win the election.

Ex-Gov. Mark Warner to Run for Senate
Former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat, officially declared his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by GOP Sen. John Warner.

In an e-mail message to supporters, Mark Warner said Thursday he will run in the 2008 election for the seat John Warner will vacate next year after five terms in the Senate. The two Warners aren't related.

No other Democrats have formally announced they would seek the party's nomination.

The Senate seat being sought by Mark Warner has been occupied by Republicans since 1973. John Warner, 80, took over the seat in 1979 and recently announced he would not seek re-election.

What happens should Clinton or Obama win the presidency (or run together)? Is a special election held or does the governor appoint a successor?

New York has a Dem governor (Spitzer who caved in to Chertoff) and Illinois also has a Dem (Blagojevich position unknown).

I think the Governor would have to appoint someone, Blagojevich seems like a really reasonable guy i dont think he would appoint someone crazy.

OMG...it would be AMAZING if Spitzer appointed Anthony Weiner to replace Clinton (whom I hate ugh). This guy absolutely kicks ass, I can see him ripping Sessions apart. I think Weiner would be the only logical choice.

BTW he's also a DREAM cosponsor in the House AND plays hockey AND went to my High School, so ummm pretty obvious I'm gonna promote this guy.
