Survival of the fittest. May just be me but I do not see an problem with Merit based immigration system. Canada has it too!

As part of CIR, I think a Merit based immigration is something that can be discussed. I don't think it should be part of DREAM Act.

The Principle still doesn't change. Legal immigrants after CIR can still argue that end of chain immigration will not allow them to sponsor their family. I really don't see how we are going to get any permanent fix without giving Republicans what they want.

Yes, I have undocumented parents and they would be happy to sacrifice - continue to live illegal or go back to home country - knowing their kids have a secure future. If we don't get legal status, they still remain undocumented - nothing changes! Its a loose- loose!

That is true if dems give raise for dream act, what would republicans ask for CIR?. Yeah you just gotta turn in a family member to be eligible.

Again, a reminder that RAISE Act cuts legal immigration by half. It isn't as simple as "we'll make our legal immigration system merit-based"!

I don't think 100% merit based is the way to go, but it's a conversation that should be dealt with under CIR. Some family sponsorship must always be allowed - spouse and minor children. And if merit based was the direction decided, RAISE Act would be a terrible way to do it.

from Charlie Dent (R) PA

“There is a possibility we could see some action on this probably in the next several weeks,” Dent said, suggesting the legislation could be tied in another bill.

Dent said he wants to see secure borders, but there needs to be an immigration fix.
