Don't be so sure, there are tons of people who would do low wage work if given the chance. That or automation might take root and make those workers irrelevant.

The median US household salary is about $59,000. Half the country makes less $$ for a family of four. As an SEIU leader in Seattle, let me tell you, it would be and is a challenge to support a family of four with that salary here
Granted, the median in King County is higher, but housing and food are significantly more expensive than most areas in the country.

North Carolina is blessed that everything is cheap. Houses can be had for 20-60k. Education is cheap. Gas is 2.55, but everyones like "UGH but then I'd have to live in the city! I might get dirty or chip a nail."
