Hey guys,

I emailed the author of the article, Tina Griego, asking her where she got the information for her statement that "The DREAM Act is expected to be introduced in the House in about two weeks."

This is her exact response, and it is sketchy at best:

Quote:
Hello,
Info on the DREAM Act from the National Immigration Law Center and National Immigration Forum.
The expectation is that debate will not begin until later in the summer. The question then become whether the Act should stand on its own or be attached to a comprehensive immigration reform bill.
Best,
Tina
To me, it is unsatisfactory.

Just thought I'd share it with everyone.

Figures,

I think we should close this thread to avoid any drama come end of this month, surely there will be some of this;

"AW MY GOD it's march 31st and Dream hasn't been introduced yet!!!!1?!?!111?"
"Obama is a liar!"

It will be introduced when it's time, hopefully sooner than later. Please do not assign a deadline to something like this, only to be let down, that's your own fault.

Getting legilslation through the US Congress and onto the president's desk takes precise timing. Durbin is the Majority Whip, the second highest ranking Senator in the US Senate, he will know when the time comes to push for dream. That said, Durbin will know when the political environment is prime for passage of Dream. In my opinion 2009 is shaping up like our best year for passage.

It probably will be introduced by the end of March, but if it slips over into April we shouldn't have a heart attack about it. I mean we are talking about congress here; do they do anything on time?

What I find more interesting is her second comment relating to standalone or not. I think we can see two paths, or at least they see two paths depending on the environment (ie.economy).

1) The environment is still too bad for CIR, so they bring up the DA alone, or a modified version of it to make it more expansive (This could be the explanation of why immigrant advocates are recently saying the bill isn't expansive enough; they think this is the only bill that may have shot this year so they want to include as many people as possible).

2) The environment is good, so they try CIR. They can use the argument that if we legalize the 12 million or so undocumented, then work wages can go up since companies would have to start paying minimum wage to everyone so it would benefit all. Also more tax revenue, better national security, etc.

There is also:

3). The DA gets attach to some bill relating to education, defense, or the military by Sen. Durbin.

I see #1 as a good possibility. Healthcare is coming up during the Fall; how can you do healthcare reform and comprehensive immigration reform during three or so months? I know the Obama administration has do a lot of things early, but even this would be tough.

I think if you do 1) you could do the following. Bring up DA, amend in some tough immigration laws, like E-verify if it hasn't been reauthorized yet, maybe add adjobs, address the HB visa problem, and add some minor reform to the immigration system (address family separation).

Also, I wonder if the bill that will be introduced in March will be the same, or changed in some way?

We can rest assured that the Dream Act will be introduced, there are many credible sources to suggest that, but we now must turn our attention to the wording of the Dream Act. In other words, is going to be a restrictive version as Sen. Hutchinson and Sen. Coleman would like or a more liberal? O.K., either way all we want is a chance right? I feel confident that Durbin has his limits on how restrictive the bill can get.
