I think I might have read it in The Conscience of a Liberal, a book by Nobel prize-winning economist Paul Krugman; great read by the way.

I know for a fact that after Reagan’s massive tax cuts for the rich, the national debt skyrocketed to unprecedented heights so he started to raise taxes again. Of course, conservatives never talk about tax hikes under Reagan but the fact of the matter is that he started raising taxes just one year after his massive tax cuts, effectively restoring one third of those very same taxes he’d cut the year before.

He kept raising taxes again in 1982, 1983 and 1984, but it wasn’t until his second term when he dealt the largest corporate tax hike in history. Unfortunately, none of this helped mitigate the massive amount of debt he had acquired due to his initial tax cuts, and as you can see in this graph, he ended up joining other Republican presidents who’ve increased the national debt tremendously.
