guys, this is the way it has to go. there is no easy shortcut to get a controversial bill passed in the US government (see last Tuesday).

instead of bashing every politician, be thankful that there are senators like Mr. Durbin that still give a shit about us. This is a start. I don't know where the bill will end up, but it can't be passed into law if it is not introduced, so be thankful for this.

I'm a little confused. According to library of congress, Dream Act of 2009 was read twice then referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:s.00729:

But for Dream Act of 2010, its status is "Sep 23, 2010: Read the second time. Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders. Calendar No. 583." Seems to have passed the committee part already.

"This bill was considered in committee which has recommended it be considered by the Senate as a whole. Although it has been placed on a calendar of business, the order in which legislation is considered and voted on is determined by the majority party leadership. Keep in mind that sometimes the text of one bill is incorporated into another bill, and in those cases the original bill, as it would appear here, would seem to be abandoned."

Does that mean they are going to bring it to the senate floor soon? Also, can't seem to locate Dream Act 2010 in library of congress site.

S.729 is the old Dream Act bill, which has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, However, the Committee never votes on to recommend the bill to the Senate Floor. Thus, S.729 will die at the end of this Congressional session if the Committee still hasn't taken any action. Harry Reid can't bring this bill to the Senate Floor as a stand-alone bill because he can't skip the committee process.

S. 3827 is the sister-bill of Dream Act. The difference is that the bill does not go through the Committee process. It's given a privilege to skip the committee process. So, this time around, the majority leader Harry Reid has all the discretion when and whether he should bring the bill to the Senate floor for a vote.

In short, Harry Reid is the boss now !!! Make sure that we all call Harry Reid to ask him to bring DREAM Act to the floor for a vote.

It feels like a 2007 de-javu to me all over again....

Please keep in mind that in 2008 and 2009, our nation was dealing with a terrible recession, the herculean task of passing health care reform, and struggling to control Wall Street. I know it feels like it's never our time, but there are legitimate reasons why it wasn't brought up for a vote. My guess is that between 2001 and 2007, Republicans just didn't care. Now that Democrats are in power and do care about us, they still have other stuff to deal with. Be thankful for the support we do have, do not lose your patience, let's continue with our activism, it's the only way.

For all those confused the reason Durbin re-introduced the bill under a new bill number was so that Reid could use a procedure known as Rule 14 which allows the majority leader to skip the committee votes and bring it straight to the floor. Many insiders believe that the DOD Bill failed because of DADT already being on the bill and the opposition by many GOP members to it. they used DREAM Act as another excuse to not move forward but when the dod bill gets back for a vote after November its expected that the DREAM Act will once again be offered as an amendment with no DADT language .
