Yes, a symbolic trial without enough Republican votes will lead to his imprisonment at Pelican Bay State Prison for life. The votes are not there.

If trump wants to run again... 82M people will stand up and slap his ass back down. Trump is a villain that can fire up the democratic base and keep Dems in power.

And let's be realistic.. Trump is 78, obese, and decidedly unhealthy... do the math.. its not in his favor
I think Dems are hopeful that they can get enough GOP votes to convict Trump and ban him from office since they consider him to be a huge legitimate threat.

If that happens, good. Everyone just keep in mind that there are bigger and smarter assholes witjin the Republican Party who are also capable of starting a huge nativist populist movement for the 2024 election. This shit does not end with Trump.

Which is one of the main reasons I support the impeachment trial. If there are no consequences, why wouldn't someone try again?

Republicans not voting against Trump's insurrection need to be in the record as traitors to the union.

That's why a vote is necessary.

You're assuming enough Republicans will vote to convict Trump...

A symbolic trial that just tries to embarrass Trump isn't a consequence. Trump doesn't care and the GOP will argue Trump's speech is protected under 1st Amemdement and that the rioters took his speech too far.

I'm not concerned about this happening again. I'm more concerned about Congress wasting valuable time and leaving us unprotected for the possible election of another asshole who is more ruthless on immigration.

Based on what evidence? They can easily argue that Trump's speech is protected under the 1st Amendment. What is it that Trump said?

"We won. They stole the election."

"We are going to fight like hell."

"I'm going to march down xyz avenue with you."

"Defend your Constitution."

Playing devil's advocate here: a lot of those Republicans will say Trump simply meant to protest and that the rioters took it too far.

Trump's base doesn't go by your reasoning. They don't care. GOP knows that.

It's not symbolic. It's procedure.

I think the fact that McConnell said Trump is responsible gives a possibility of a conviction in the senate. Most centrist republicans want to disassociate from trumpisim and this might be the way they do that.

No, I am not assuming that. It still sends a message even if Trump isn't convicted. If you don't think this can happen again here, look what happened in Germany. Hitler wasn't successful in his first coup, and many years later he was. This attempted coup clearly showed democracy isn't as safe as we thought here.

There's only one article of impeachment. The trial won't take that long.
