But if he or she was from Hispaniola wouldn't the trip straight to PR be sufficient. Why go to Bahamas and then PR?

That is what Dominican people do, they swim straight to PR.

It is because most from Haiti go there instead.

Forgot to mention Congrats to MrsK and Cynpal25 for gaining permanent residence.

I can only assume because it is easier to "blend in" in the hope of gaining a Bahamian passport. Bahamians are allowed to visit the US visa free.
