Sometimes some volunteers are just embarassing. You can amend your returns right now we're only amending '09 though since this year is the last one people can claim a credit/get a refund for it. It depends if your parents don't claim you as a dependent and you were over age 25 back in '09 you might get EIC. Also if you didn't claim an education credit back in '09 you can still claim it.

I wanted to say that your thread inspired me to tackle the filing of income taxes. Last week, I sat down at the computer, and filed my taxes! Both state and federal, using the free web interface provided by the IRS and CA government.

I did claim an education credit which, as msaccountant says, won't be processed until the end of the month.

Thanks!
Yay! Glad you took that chance!
Doesn't it feel great to do and understand your own return?

I don't think you have to wait but you should go ahead and rescind it! You will be able to amend it if you will qualify for any credits or didn't take any back in '09. It will be extremely helpful for you to take your '09 return to either a vita site or local accounting firm or to the place you got it done. They will input your ssn.

Okay, thanks! I will go rescind it now. Can I be able to do it through phone? I heard you can do that too. Can anyone confirm this? I do my taxes with Turbo Tax. I think it better to do it with vita site just to be safe.

Hmmm I didn't know that.

Let us know if it was possible.

Hey bud, About rescinding your ITIN, I believe when you file your next tax return with your new social, the IRS will automatically get the drift and switch all the reporting to the new number. This is the answer I got from multiple reliable sources who regularly work in Accounting and Tax. Secondly, what exactly do you want to amend in your previous returns?

I previously already had an SSN that was not valid for employment. I've gotten approved for EAD, but I haven't had the chance to go to an office to update this information. Do I need to do this before filing my taxes? Or will it not be a problem if I do this after filing? This is my first year filing taxes, so I'm kind of clueless

Also, I was a part-time student for one semester in 2012 at a community college. I looked if I could get Lifetime Learning Credit, and it said that the following could NOT claim it on their taxes:
"You (or your spouse) were a nonresident alien for any part of 2011 and the nonresident alien did not elect to be treated as a resident alien for tax purposes."

I did not file taxes in 2011, and obviously, I was a nonresident alien since I had not filed for DACA or EAD then. Does this mean that I can not claim this credit? Or can I claim it now that I'm a legal alien authorized to work for tax purposes?

That would be very helpful since if you do go somewhere to get your return prepared and you show them your ssn and they see that it says not valid for employment then you might not be able to claim the EIC. Do you qualify for EIC? Are you 25 or older?

The reason I say this is because some preparers might not know about DACA....so yea.

Why are you trying to take the Lifetime Credit first of all. You seem to qualify for the American Opportunity. Is this the first degree you are trying to obtain? How many years have you attended college?

Btw we are considered resident aliens for tax purposes even without DACA-status. So you would qualify for it.

Thank you for your reply, msaccountant!

I'm considering doing my taxes online via TurboTax, since it should be a simple return, so I'm assuming from your information that I'll be able to file without updating at a social security office first?

I do not qualify for the EIC, as I'm only 21 years old, and I don't think I quality for American Opportunity either because my attendance in 2012 was less than half-time.

Another question--I found out that I'm not required to file a state tax return in CA because I'm single and only made $10.5k with no dependents. No one can claim me as a dependent either, because of my age and the fact that I was not a full-time student during 2012. Also, boxes 15-17 on my W-2 are left blank, assumably because I work and live in CA, but the office is in another state. Would there be any benefits to filing a state tax return?
